Secure credit and debit card processing with MasterCard SecureCode & Verified by VISA (3D Secure)
MasterCard SecureCode & Verified by VISA
MasterCard and VISA have developed products which render MasterCard, Maestro and VISA payments on the internet considerably more secure and give you certainty of payment: MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by VISA. Both products are based upon 3D-Secure technology.
How does it work?
3D-Secure software – integrated into your check-out – sets up an online contact between your customers and their banks before any payment takes place. Your customers are asked to type in a ‘SecureCode’: a password or code only known to them. The bank will subsequently assess whether the customers are indeed the rightful Card Holders. Which makes it safe for you to accept.
Why 3D-Secure?
Without 3D-Secure software it is impossible for you to verify whether the rightful Card Holder is making the payment. In case of fraud all damages will be sustained by you.
However, when you ‘are’ 3D-Secure the liability for fraud* lies with the issuing, regardless of whether the Card Holder is using a SecureCode. You suffer no chargebacks even when the transaction turns out to be fraudulent.
How to use?
Since 2005 the EMS payment platform has been suitable for the hassle-free processing of 3D-Secure transactions. When connecting your terminal EMS will activate MasterCard SecureCode & Verified by Visa free of charge.
One caveat: your Payment Service Provider – the supplier of your checkout system – also needs to support 3D-Secure payments. All providers which are linked to EMS’ systems have been certified to that extent. Your provider will activate the 3D-Secure in your check-out upon your instruction.
Only Acceptants who use an internet check-out can make use of 3D-Secure. For the time being this service is not available to Mail Order-Telephone Order (MOTO) and e-Terminal Acceptants.
