First launched in 1966, there are 817 Million cards worldwide and 4,2 Million cards in the Netherlands. The UK market accounted for over a quarter of the European card total at the end of 2004. France, Spain and Turkey account for the majority of the remaining cards, with 13%, 12% and 12% of the market respectively.
A large number of MasterCard cards in France and Spain are issued as debit cards as opposed to charge or credit products. The Turkish MasterCard card base has soared in recent years whilst the number of such cards in Germany has stagnated. There are 25 million acceptance locations worldwide and 90 thousand acceptance locations in the Netherlands. |
