Accepting credit and debit card transaction on location by means of a payment terminal

A modern payment terminal prevents your organisation from incurring fraud-related damages. Almost all credit and debit cards issued in The Netherlands are fitted with the so-called EMV chip. This chip lets your customers authorise their payments with a pin code instead of with a signature. A payment terminal that can read this chip prevents criminals from making payments with stolen, found or copied cards. This enables you to exclude this form of fraud and to prevent (reputational) damage.

Most new payment terminals are fitted for ‘Het Nieuwe Pinnen’ *. However, when you consider purchasing a second-hand payment terminal, you should ascertain whether you will still be able to use it after January 1st 2012.

From that date onwards PIN payments will no longer be possible and payment terminals need to be able to read the chip on payment cards instead of the magnetic strip. Moreover, credit card payment authorised by PIN code safeguard you as yet from damage by fraud.
